Here’s Why I Bought This SSR for Lee Munro’s Garage—and Why You May Want It In Yours
This 2005 Chevrolet SSR has travelled only 18,881 kilometres—remarkably limited use for one of Chevrolet’s most unusual performance vehicles.
But the mileage is only part of the reason I bought it.
This is one of just 83 SSRs built for the Canadian market for 2005, and it is one of fewer than 20 Canadian examples believed to have been equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. The factory build information confirms its Canadian specification and rare M10 Tremec six-speed .
The Engine the SSR Deserved
For 2005, Chevrolet transformed the SSR by installing the 6.0-litre LS2 V8.
Closely related to the engine powering the contemporary Corvette, the naturally aspirated LS2 gave the SSR the performance its dramatic appearance had always promised.
This example combines that V8 with a 3.73 rear axle and limited-slip differential, sending its power to the rear wheels.
Lower the roof, start the V8 and it becomes apparent that the SSR isn't simply an unusual pickup.
It is Chevrolet's interpretation of a factory-built hot rod.
The Rare Six-Speed Manual
This is the specification that really caught my attention.
Instead of the automatic transmission found in most SSRs, this one was factory equipped with the Tremec six-speed manual.
Three pedals fundamentally change the character of the vehicle. The LS2 becomes something you interact with rather than simply experience, making the SSR considerably more engaging on an interesting road.
When you combine that transmission with Canadian-market production of only 83 vehicles, you arrive at a configuration that is genuinely difficult to duplicate.
Only 18,881 Kilometres
Rarity is much more interesting when the vehicle has also been preserved.
At only 18,881 kilometres, this SSR has travelled an average of less than 1,000 kilometres per year since new.
That is low enough to make it an interesting addition to a collection, while still leaving its next owner free to use it for exactly what Chevrolet intended—open-air driving with a big V8 and a manual gearbox.
Torch Red Is Exactly Right
Some vehicles can wear almost any colour. An SSR should make a statement.
There was nothing else quite like it when it was new, and there really hasn't been anything like it since.
Among SSRs, the LS2-powered, six-speed manual versions sit in a particularly interesting place.
Add Canadian-market rarity and fewer than 19,000 kilometres, and this became exactly the sort of vehicle I look for.
